Rokuon-ji Temple or Golden Pavilion

This was originally a banzai tree planted back in the 1200's. It was left untouched and allowed to grow into quite a large tree. Notice the large branch laying along the ground and supported by a wood structure--it looks like the bow of a canoe.

Some have told us that it is a rooster on top of objects of special interest. Others have said it is a phoenix. What do you think?

A view of the top of the Golden Pavilion through the trees.
