The Heian Jingu Shrine (Shinto)

A wide view of the shrine buildings and huge courtyard. This shrine was initially constructed in 1895 and rebuilt in 1940. Kyoto was the capital of Japan for over a thousand years.

There were two fountains for washing or purification before entering the shrine. This was the dragon one, the other was a bear.

The entrance gate from the inside looking out into the city of Kyoto.

The many-roofed shrine building.
